A SWITCHED-ON scheme to bring free wifi to Tenby has been launched in the town.

Tudor Square has been chosen to be the first area to enjoy the service, which it is hoped will be eventually extended further within the resort.

A consortium of Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism, Pembrokeshire College and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is behind the project, which benefits both visitors and residents.

The Chamber has funded the purchase and installation of the hardware, and chairman Chris Osborne said: "This is the first stage of an initiative to match our customers' increasingly digital expectations with a community-wide solution.

"We hope to roll our the wifi area in clusters, with the ultimate objective of making Tenby a genuinely Smart Town."

The pilot phase of the project was supported by the Welsh government's European Commission-funded Digital Tourism Programme, with one of the recommendations from the consultants, MJR Solutions,to create a wifi zone throughout the walled town.

Pembrokeshire College has been training some Tenby businesses to get the best from their smartphones and tablets in relation to e-communications and e-commerce, as well as increasing their understanding of how today's visitors find information and make decisions.

This has been carried out through the college's Euro-funded mCommunity Project, which has developed a smartphone app for distance learning.
