YOUNG athlete Sulien Luckman, who died earlier this year, has been remembered by his team-mates at Pembrokeshire Harriers at their recent presentation evening.

At the evening in Neyland, a new award for the Most Improved Athlete was jointly awarded to Eliza Martin and William Hughes, in recognition of the great strides they have made in their personal performances this season. The award was presented on behalf of the Spirit of Sulien Trust by Sulien's trainer, club chairman Peter Freeman.

Sulien, aged 12, who died in March this year, was a committed member of the Harriers team, particularly enjoying long distance and cross country running. The Spirit of Sulien Trust has been set up in his memory, to support young people, community development and bereaved families, especially in West Wales. The trophy was made by Bryony Singh of Gorsewen Arts in Whitland, with brass on spalted sycamore. It is based on the trust logo.

The Pembrokeshire Harriers presentation evening is an annual event which celebrates the achievements of all the athletes in the team, from the junior competitors to those of much maturer years. The Harriers meet regularly throughout the year at the athletics track in Sir Thomas Picton school, and at other venues. They always welcome new members, and people who would like to come along and try the different events on offer.

“Sulien would have really enjoyed tonight” said Mr Freeman. “He was a team player, someone who was always willing to do extra events to get points for the team”

The Spirit of Sulien Trust has already presented awards at the Pendine Fun Run, and for the Year 6 leavers at Tavernspite , and is currently working towards developing a small grants programme for young people and organisations in the area.
