BUSINESSES in Milford Haven have demonstrated true Christmas spirit by helping fund a festive party for people who would otherwise be spending Christmas Day alone.

Christmas Together is a fun, free event for people in the M ilford Haven area who, for whatever reason, won't be spending the day with family or friends.

Set up in 2012 by then-Mayor Cllr Guy Woodham, the day is open to people of all ages who would like some companionship on what is often called the loneliest day of the year.

And local businesses have been happy to help support this year's event.

Cllr Woodham visited EuroSpar, on Charles Street, last week, to pick up a cheque for almost £500 from store owner Chris Ward.

The money was raised from town months of carrier bag sales, and includes match-funding of £150 from wholesaler A F Blakemore.

Donations have also been received from Milford Haven Town Council, Milford Haven Round Table, the Port of Milford Haven, Valero, Tesco Milford Haven and Austwel Ltd.

Cllr Woodham said he had been touched by the response.

"Some people are happy to spend Christmas Day by themselves, but for others it can be a very difficult time."

He added that loneliness still suffered from a "certain degree of social stigma, yet can have a very damaging effect on someone's mental and physical wellbeing".

Held at the newly-refurbished Pill Social Centre, a party of 100 people will enjoy a festive three-course meal, followed by an afternoon of entertainment.

The event runs from11am until 6pm, and guests are welcome to attend some or all of the day.

Transport is provided for those who need it, and there is no charge to attend.

If you live in the Milford Haven area and will be alone on Christmas Day, or know someone else who will and would like to join in this very special event, contact Cllr Woodham by calling 07411 287533 or email christmastogether@hotmail.co.uk.

Anyone who is free on Christmas Day and would like to volunteer can also get in touch.
