THREE local charities will feel the benefit of a few extra pounds this Christmas, after a charity ball raised more than £1,500 to help people suffering from diabetes, stroke and Parkinson’s.

Event organiser Marie Morgan, from Llangwm, runs Weight Watchers meetings in Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock.

What started as something to help motivate her members in the lead-up to Christmas, soon became a great way of raising money for good causes.

“We decided we would raise the money for local charities, and at the same time stick with the weight-loss theme, as losing weight can reduce the chances of stroke and diabetes,” said Marie.

Parkinson’s is also a cause close to Marie’s heart, as the husbands of two of her colleagues live with the condition.

Held at the Beggar’s Reach Hotel in October, more than 70 people attended the glittering event, with local businesses helping out by donating prizes for a charity draw.

These included two rugby balls, one signed by the Scarlets, donated by Helen James of Jeff James and Son plant hire, and a British Lions ball signed by captain Sam Warburton, donated by Jane Williams.

There were also vouchers for health and beauty treatments, meat and wine, a reiki session and a host of other great prizes, and flowers for the event were organised by Sue Reynolds, of Flowers and Favours.

“It was a totally successful evening, and I’ll definitely be holding another one next year,” said Sue, adding that her members had all be incredibly supportive.

“I really am a very proud leader, and I just want to shout out a big thank-you for making a difference” she said.

The £1,600 total has been divided between the Stroke Association, Pembrokeshire Parkinson’s and Withybush Hospital’s paediatric diabetes service, which helps children and young people with diabetes.

Philomena Davies, paediatric diabetes nurse, said the £500 donation was a great boost.

The money donated to the service is used to buy new equipment, and to support parents and children in Pembrokeshire.
