MP: unlawful pension payments scandal is gift to those who wish to abolish Pembrokeshire

Western Telegraph: MP: unlawful pension payments scandal is gift to those who wish to abolish Pembrokeshire MP: unlawful pension payments scandal is gift to those who wish to abolish Pembrokeshire

Local MP Stephen Crabb has said Pembrokeshire County Council is in 'last chance saloon' following the hugely damaging unlawful pension payments scandal that has engulfed County Hall.

Yesterday (Thursday) the Wales Audit Office said that more than £50,000 of payments to chief executive Bryn Parry-jones and another senior officer in lieu of pension contributions, were unlawful.

Mr Crabb told the Western Telegraph: "This is damaging for Pembrokeshire, no question.

"At a time when people are trying to make the case for Pembrokeshire to keep its local authority, this report is a gift to those who want to see the County abolished.”

"As we saw with the Estyn and CSSIW reports into child safeguarding, the culture of weak oversight and lack of transparency is still our Council's fatal weakness. It does feel like 'last chance saloon' for Pembrokeshire County Council. It is now up to Councillors to show that they understand the seriousness of the situation.”

Mr Crabb said some of the blame lay with the Welsh Government not introducing transparency measures along the lines of those introduced in England.

“The UK Government used the Localism Act to introduce new measures in England to increase financial transparency and give people greater power over the pay practises of their councils," he said.

"Sadly, the Welsh Government did not introduce the same measures in Wales and there have been problems across numerous Welsh local authorities. At a time when finances are being cut, we need a bigger spotlight on how ratepayers’ money is being used.”

As per usual people like Crabb are therefor one thing themselves. Wake up and smell the coffee.

If Pembrokeshire County Council is disbanded and the council offices at the riverside are vacated, would it be a chance to redevelop them into a more appropriate leisure facility with cafes and other tourist facilities along the river (which is what should have been developed in the first place).... This would go a long way to rejuvenate the town... Do we need these people who earn more than the PM and then try and get even more by "unlawful" pensions manipulation...?

Is our MP seriously suggesting that public officers need to be directed by law in order to behave correctly?

Clearly this is the case in Pembrokeshire, and the fault here can be laid at the door of The Leader, his Cabinet and the IPPG supporters. who are elected to run the Council, and presumably think about the advice offered to them by highly paid, professional unelected officers.

I have exercised my right to question the Adult Services O&S. committee, a legal right, and have been exasperated that my views have been commented on by officers but NOT the Committee members who mostly appear numb .

Pembrokeshire County Council is rotten from top to bottom with a few good apples in amongst the bad. This isn't new. Many people have spoken about this over many years yet the situation has been allowed to continue and worsen. Those in power have chosen to help themselves before helping others.

Why is it only now that Mr Crabb is speaking out?

I can remember when Pembrokeshire was first subsumed into Dyfed - it was stupid idea then and it is stupid idea NOW.
I think the planners in their ivory city towers can have no concept of life in a rural area.
Almalgamation only forces individuals further away from the seats of power and any hope of redress form corruption,
Come on politicians get off your fat backsides and sort out this mess, less complacency and enjoying life and treat your role with the seriousness it demands

So Mr Crabb is in favour of keeping Pembrokeshire with all of its associated costs
I thought his government, well the Conservatives, fought the election promising to cut the cost of local goverment. Please Mr Crabb inform us how you would do this and if you think Pembrokeshire County Council has succeeded to date..

When will Politicians and Councillors stop insulting the intelligence of the public Crabb just can’t help himself in passing some blame to the Welsh ‘Government’, who are, yes, Labour run, so of course, he is going to attempt to score political points and try and deflec attention from where the blame really lies!! That is with the lilly livered Councillors in County Hall who, like Crabbie, are running scared as there may be less jobs for them in the future should Pembs Council disappear. Some of these Councillors, who pass themselves off as Independants in County Hall, are seen covorting with Crabb at demonstrations at Withybush and who actually assist the same Crabb in their election campaign, wearing guess which colour....blue. Independent = Conservative = running with the fox and hounds in order to secure their position.
Where have they been when the vote for these payments are made in County Hall and where are they when Withybush goes down the pan???? Do the honest people of this County a favour.........resig
n and then leave Wales!!!!

I don't think it will be councillors losing their jobs if we became Dyfed once again. It would be those at the sharp end who carry out the services that would lose their jobs. I think Stephen Crabb's time may be better spent convincing his leader not to keep stuffing peers into the House of Lords at £360 per day plus expenses. But there again could be a nice little earner if one lost their job as an MP.

using Mr Crabbes logic we'll be calling for the abolition of Westminster ?
What a silly sausage - perhaps he should grow a back bone and castigate the flagrant abuse of power at the Kremlin,

Isn't the IPPG block vote exactly like the Trades Union block vote he has criticised in the past?

Doubly sad when you think that's the sort of person who rises "to the top" to be the best amongst equals - beginning to think giving the vote to the criminally insane or prisoners isn't so bad after all

Better late than never Mr Crabb.
Good of him to remind everyone who he is in plenty of time for the 2015 elections.
Have to say though, he did turn up for the SCBU photo opportunity (of course I mean demonstration).
