The future of Hakin Community School and Hubberston VC School will be decided at a cabinet meeting on Monday (February 10).

A recommendation by Pembrokeshire County Council’s director for children and schools asks cabinet to choose from one of three options, the first of which is to discontinue both schools and establish one English medium Church in Wales Voluntary Controlled primary school from September 2016.

The other two options include retaining the status quo or providing a new build for Hakin only.

Following a review into primary education in the area, last November cabinet agreed to consult on a proposal to merge the two schools “to strengthen and develop primary education provision for pupils in the Hakin and Hubberston area.”

A consultation, which ended on January 6, found “there is little appetite for the proposal”.

Among the concerns highlighted was the perceived loss of “family ethos”, the increased size of school, no perceived educational benefit, and the loss of parental choice and community space.

An evaluation of how much each option would cost the council over 25 years found merging the two schools would be the cheapest alternative at just under £2m, while doing nothing would cost close to £2.1m with a new school for Hakin costing closer to £3m.

A report by the director stated: “The recommended option, based on the above evaluation would be to provide a new school for the Hakin and Hubberston area.

“However, the statutory consultation has shown significant opposition to this option and cabinet must consider this in reaching their decision.”
