Assembly Member Angela Burns calls for honesty over Withybush A&E future

A county Assembly Member has urged 'honesty and transparency' over the future of Withybush Hospital's accident and emergency department.

During a heated exchange at First Minister's questions, south Pembrokeshire Assembly Member Angela Burns raised her concerns over the future of A&E at Withybush Hospital.

First Minister Carwyn Jones had just told a Regional AM that Withybush A&E would remain, saying: “I can say that the local health board has confirmed that it wishes to see 24/7 emergency cover continue at Withybush General Hospital”.

But Mrs Burns replied: “Perhaps you would care to tell us what effect there will be on A&E as paediatrics is now being sucked to Glangwili hospital and there will be less and less paediatric cover in Withybush hospital.

"Paediatrics, as you know, takes up 25% of most A&Es, and, without paediatrics going through that hospital, A&E at Withybush will have no option but to have a reconfiguration of hours.

"Some honesty in this discussion from the health board to a public that is already very upset by the changes going on in Hywel Dda in the Pembrokeshire area would be much appreciated. The Minister promised us clarity and transparency, a lesson the health board has yet to learn”.

Speaking afterwards Mrs Burns said: "I want some honesty here. I'm always being accused by Labour of scaremongering but I have been proved right so far, look what's happening.

"The SCBU is closing. Paediatric training is being centred at Glangwili. Trauma is being centred at Glangwili. The reality is that children of all ages are a substantial part of the traffic flow through an A&E.

"Without paediatricians the A&E will become financially unviable. With Trauma moving eastwards this compounds the problem. I want honesty from the Government and the Health Board and the patsy question and answer with the First Minister by a regional AM was simply part of the smoke and mirrors campaign being waged by Labour Assembly Members under pressure to stop their Government destroying the Withybush."

Two routes out of the area blocked this morning due to RTA's , moving any services out of Withybush and locating 30 miles down the road is suicide, you are going to kill people! how many times does the Helath Minister and the Health Board need to be told.

Nice try Angela, but you don't realise who you are dealing with. This master plan was agreed years ago by the chairman - a Haverfordwest man remember ! He brought in the team from outside to get on with the new business. and that is what is happening. - the second in command is Trevor Pertwee from England somewhere. To the best of my knowledge and belief they don't understand the word transparency and have no worries about shutting down Withybush.entirely.

Don't worry about the roads Seaview, this Health Board has it all under control - a fleet of helicopters based at Withybush and flying 24 hours per day and all night, Pilots on full shift system and available 24/7. You wont need roads at all - and you do believe these plans don't you ? - haven't these people always told the truth to the people of Pembrokeshire ?

I never voted for the WG because I was told years ago this would happen. Wales is been run into the ground by those in Cardiff, Capital city and County of Wales.!!!.....u want transparency..lol..a
ll u have to do is to look at PCC and you realise they are all at it, all the same. They talked in the Council Meeting last week, yes that one!!..about not being able to attract the right people unless u paid them the right money. Then they said that even if they paid them the right money they refused the jobs when offered. Maybe its to do with the fact that why should they move here or stay here. Most people think about their families their education and access to good medical services...both of which are dreadful in this area and are in decline....so, if you want people to stay and work here you have to provide the services. I know of a person in the medical profession who rather than stay here in what was a dead end job with no chance of learning her skills go to live in Stornoway and work in the hospital there as it would give her better training and opportunity and that says it all doesnt it....we are wasting our time...the WG do no care or understand and neither do they want to....
