The axe looks set to fall on a residential home in Pembrokeshire.

Pembrokeshire County Council's cabinet is to be asked next Monday (March 10), to approve the closure of Sunnybank in Narberth.

The home, which currently only has eight residents - has been the subject of a 15-week consultation period.

A report to cabinet in November revealed that the cost of maintaining each resident in the home was more than £1,000 a week – more than twice the cost of commissioning a residential placement in the independent sector.

The authority says that it would cost around £3 million to repair physical defects at the 1960s-built home and to bring it up to modern-day standards.

A report to be presented to next Monday’s cabinet meeting asks for the closure of Sunnybank to be approved because the building is outdated.

The report continues: ‘We cannot identify the funds to undertake the significant improvements required and there are good alternatives in residential, nursing and extra care facilities for the residents.

"Furthermore, Sunnybank should immediately stop taking admissions so that the closure can be sensitively and carefully managed.

Residents will be supported to move to alternative accommodation of their choice as soon as practicable."
