A MAN has been airlifted to Morriston Hospital following an explosion at a property in Wiston this afternoon, the Western Telegraph has learned.

Roads around the village have been closed for several hours and nearby properties have been evacuated while a bomb disposal team, which has now arrived at the scene, carries out checks of the area.

One local, who asked not to be named, told the Western Telegraph: "I have been told that he has suffered a serious injury to a hand.

"Apparently there were two small bangs and then a louder one. People are just waiting to be allowed back to their homes now. We have been told it could be several hours yet while the whole place is searched."

  It is understood the victim is in his late teens or early twenties.

A police spokesman told the Western Telegraph: “Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating an incident that occurred at a property in Wiston, Pembrokeshire this afternoon at about 12.05pm.

  “A man sustained a non-life threatening injury following what was believed to be a minor explosion at the premises, and as a result he has been conveyed by air ambulance to Morriston hospital for treatment.

  “In order to ensure the safety of all, nearby properties have been evacuated and the road westwards has been closed from Wiston towards Crundale.

  “The road is closed for about half a mile from Wiston and motorists are asked to avoid the Wiston to Crundale road until further notice.

  “Explosive Ordnance Disposal have been notified as a precaution.”

  A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called today, Thursday April 10, to a property in the Wiston area of Haverfordwest.

  “A paramedic in a rapid response vehicle was supported by a Wales Air Ambulance, and a man with non-life threatening injuries was airlifted to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.”

 

Update: 8.30pm: The Western Telegraph has learned that residents affected by the incident are not being allowed back into their properties this evening. Searches of the property will continue in the morning.
