Fast fibre broadband arrives in Haverfordwest

First published in News

FAST fibre broadband is now available for the very first time in Haverfordwest, thanks to Superfast Cymru.

The first households and businesses are now able to access fast fibre broadband which enables businesses to work faster and more efficiently, benefitting from faster upload and download speeds and reducing the need to travel.

Superfast Cymru said it would also help create jobs and expand businesses.

At home it is not just about a faster internet experience but means people will also be able to do their own thing online, all at the same time, including streaming films or downloading music.

Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates, said: “I am delighted that parts of Pembrokeshire are now able to access fast fibre broadband for the very first time thanks to Superfast Cymru. Superfast fibre broadband has the power to transform the way we do business, the way we keep in touch, how we access entertainment and how we use public services.

“The Superfast Cymru programme is probably the most ambitious in the UK. We aim to reach 96% of properties by the end of Spring 2016 making fibre available to more people more quickly than the rest of the UK. The residents and businesses in Haverfordwest are the latest to benefit. "

Households and businesses which want to take advantage of the benefits of fast fibre broadband should contact an internet service provider (ISP) of their choice to place an order.

Information about the roll-out is published on the Superfast Cymru website (www.superfast-cymru.com) including a coverage map which provides details of roll-out plans looking approximately 12 months ahead.

Areas such as Neyland, Johnston and Milford Haven will be upgraded during the next stage, starting this summer.

Ok for everyone south of the county...but what about Fishguard and Goodwick...were still in the dark ages!!...Even Newport is apparently in line for it....Newport Pembs...but thats most probably because of the holiday home owners there from London and Cardiff who need it....so I will start celebrating when we get it here between St Davids and Fishguard...!!!!!

I contacted BT about this and they told me that even though our local exchange has been upgraded and fibre cables installed to the green street cabinet that our actual telephone lines have not been upgraded and no date has been set for when we will be able to access super fast broadband. So the bottom line is that it is still not available to us and there is no indication as to when. I wonder if anyone in Haverfordwest is able to get it yet ?

Last year, the WT reported that Johnston would be upgraded in late spring. I see the word "summer" is now used.
Has something slowed things down? I notice the green cabinet is opposite the Johnston exchange building. Put in the other day.

From the point of the additional green FTTC cab being installed it can take anything from 2 weeks to 2 months before it is accepting orders. 3 cabs are live in Haverford as of today.

One of which is up in Withybush, put 01437764246 into this line checker: https://www.btwholes

l/main.html

I expect the see the remaining Haverford cabs taking orders in the next 3 weeks.

"Ok for everyone south of the county..."
Sorry to stop your gallop but hardly anywhere in the south of the County is getting it. The Dock, Pembroke, Neyland, Johnston and Milford will have it by end of Sept.

Places like Tenby, Saundersfoot, Narberth, Manorbier, St Florence etc etc do not even have rollout dates so Fishguard/Goodwick are not the only ones. The scheme is due to end at the end of 2015/16 financial year and all the exchanges being upgraded up to June 2015 have been announced so it's not looking good for the rest of us! Unfortunately, even when an exchange has been upgraded, there is no guarantee that ALL cabinets will be done. Lots of areas are complaining of cabs being left out. Various factors come into play including numbers of houses served by cabs (smaller estates may be financially unviable for instance) and also, rumour has it that those in the areas covered by National Parks may suffer due to planning regulations!

If you put your phone number in here, when your cabinet is enabled for orders it will give you a speed estimate for 'FTTC': https://www.dslcheck
er.bt.com/

At that point you can place an order with a telecoms provider.

It also tells you the number of the cabinet you are connected to, so if not yet enabled you can go on a hunt to find out where it is and whether they have installed the fibre cabinet next to it :-)

Cabinets now appearing in the Pembroke exchange area too. They don't work straight away as they have to put power into them, run the fibre from the exchange to them, and also wire between them and the existing cabinet. Each can have problems delaying completion.
