A series of beach spruce-ups are making waves in Pembrokeshire to mark Clean Coasts Week.

Starting today (Monday May 12), seven different beach clean events are being organised by Keep Wales Tidy around the county, with volunteers welcome at every one.

The inaugural Clean Coasts Week was held last year, when 2,461 people collected 2,104 bags of rubbish from 110 events in Wales.

This year, the clean-up is even more important because of damage and debris resulting from the winter’s storms.

Said Keep Wales Tidy’s project officer for Pembrokeshire, Mari Williams: “Our county’s beaches took a hammering over the winter, with huge amounts of debris washed onto our shorelines.

“We are fortunate to have many Coast Care groups in Pembrokeshire, who voluntarily look after local beaches year-round/ These groups, along with many hundreds of other volunteers, have already made a huge impact over the last few months in cleaning up our coast, and we hope that their outstanding effots will continue during Clean Coasts Week.”

The week is once again sponsored by McDonalds, and local staff will be joining in Pembrokeshire’s first clean-up of the week, leaving from Saundersfoot slipway at 11am today (Monday, May 12).

This will be followed by Newgale (tomorrow, Tuesday May 13, 10am); Marloes Sands (May 14, 10.30am); Gelliswick (May 15, 3.30pm); Manorbier (May 16, 4pm); Pen y Cwm (May 17, 1pm) and Poppit Sands (May 18, 11am). These all leave from local car parks.

Fishguard and Goodwick Community Forum environmental group is also organising a clean-up at Lower Town, Fishguard on May 18, meeting in the Skirmisher car park at 10am.
