SIXTEEN local people will help usher in one of this year's biggest sporting events when they carry the Commonwealth Games baton through St Davids.

The baton has returned to the British Isles after its world-wide tour and is just two weeks away from arriving in Pembrokeshire.

The Queen’s Baton Relay has already visited 63 nations and territories and is due to arrive in St Davids on Wednesday, May 28.

The baton contains a message from the Monarch which will be revealed at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 23.

The baton will be carried through St Davids by 14 young people – all past or present Sporting Ambassadors from the St Davids family of schools.

Joining them towards the end of the route will be two local men - Roy Stephens and Barry Webb, both in their 70s - who carried the baton when the Commonwealth Games was held in Wales 56 years ago.

The relay starts at 8am from the Bishop’s Palace and is due to finish at St Davids sports hall at 9am.

Then there is an opportunity to be photographed with the baton before a multi-sports event for children and young people begins at 10am.

Sports to participate in include athletics, cycling, weightlifting, hockey and squash. There is also a duathlon for children.
