Work is due to start this summer on highway and services works, which will transform Haverfordwest town centre as part of the plan for a Sainsbury’s superstore and hundreds of new homes.

Following the announcement that it has completed the sale of 9.6 acres of land off Thomas Parry Way to Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd, the Conygar Investment Company aims to start work soon on essential infrastructure works for the proposed 60,000 square foot retail store and filling station.

It will also provide the services for the remaining 83 acres on which the company has planning permission to build 729 houses, 182 of which will be affordable homes.

Conygar said it is committed to spending almost £8million to complete the infrastructure works within 12 months including its contributions to improvement works also about to be carried out by Pembrokeshire County Council at the nearby Churnworks Roundabout.

Conygar will be building a new four‐arm roundabout on Thomas Parry Way to form the main access to the Sainsbury's superstore and a secondary access to the housing development; reconstructing the Loo Choo (St Davids Road) roundabout to create an extra arm to provide the main access into the residential development and improvements to Thomas Parry Way to cater better for pedestrians and cyclists and to improve links to the town centre.

The works will also include drainage, street lighting, landscaping and reinforcing the utility networks in the vicinity.

Robert Ware, Chief Executive of Conygar said: “We are pleased that finally the project is underway and local people will see activity on the site in the near future.

"Like all of these major projects, it has been complex to get to this stage, but I want to pay tribute to Pembrokeshire County Council whose commitment to getting the best possible scheme for Haverfordwest has been evident from the outset. They have worked tirelessly and there is no doubt from our experience that Pembrokeshire is among the most pro‐active local authorities in Wales.

"We have already invested £15.4‐million on this scheme and this is a sign of our confidence in Pembrokeshire and Haverfordwest in particular, and from our involvement with other projects in the county among which are the Martello Quays scheme at Pembroke Dock and the marina/port scheme at Fishguard."

The Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council, Councillor Jamie Adams, said: “The announcement by Conygar that work is to start soon on this prestigious development is good news for Pembrokeshire and Haverfordwest in particular.

“Economically this is a very important project for our County and one which I hope will improve the fortunes of the town centre by increasing the area’s footfall. It will also enhance Haverfordwest’s desirability as a focus for retail activity.”
