MINDLESS idiots have been deliberately burying razor-sharp broken bottles into a pitch in Haverfordwest that will soon be playing host to top female footballers.

The local neighbourhood policing team is warning members of the public to be extra vigilant when playing at the Bridge Meadow training ground.

Vandals, with no regard for others, have been driving the necks of beer bottles in the turf before kicking and smashing them, leaving dangerous shards sticking out and scattered all around.

The training pitch, next to the main ground, is owned by the Bridge Meadow Trust, and used by Haverfordwest County.

It often holds tournaments for youngsters and is open to the public and easily accessed via a footpath.

PCSO Liam Woodford said: “The club has problems most weekends with litter left on the training pitch, but last weekend they had broken bottles stuck down in the grass.

“When the weather’s nice, youths have been congregating there and having a few drinks.

“We are warning users of the facilities, especially those with children, to lookout for the glass and also report via 101 should they see anyone acting antisocially.”

Haverfordwest County assistant secretary Richard Friday said: “This has been going on for months. It’s a good job we haven’t had any injuries.

“On Saturday I saw a man trying to play football with his two boys. He picked up almost two cases of beer bottles and brought them back to us. He said it was really annoying and dangerous.”

The Bridge Meadow will host an international ladies football match between Wales and Turkey on June 14, and the players will be using the training pitch.

Richard said: “We can’t afford to have them having any accidents.”

Kevin Craig is the groundsman at the Bridge Meadow. He said: “I spent an hour cleaning up the rubbish and glass before I can cut the grass, which is twice, three times a week.”

PCSO Rachel Wall added: “The neighbourhood policing team will have extra patrols in the area and monitor the situation. The culprits will be dealt with accordingly.”
