TWO Pembrokeshire train stations are on track for improvement work, thanks to Welsh Government funding.

Pembrokeshire County Council has received £160,000 of funding to improve National Cycle Network (NCN) links to Fishguard and Goodwick Railway Station and Milford Haven Railway Station.

The work will include a 300-metre extension of the Goodwick Moor cycle path, providing a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists that avoids the main A487.

It will provide a future route with Fishguard and Goodwick Railway Station, the ferry port, and the proposed marina.

The funding will also help develop a pedestrian and wheelchair-friendly trail from Fishguard through the Gwaun Valley to the community of Llanychaer.

In Milford Haven, work will complete one of the two remaining missing sections of network linking the communities of Hubberston and Herbrandston to the railway station.

Once completed, local people will have easier access to various areas in the town.

The majority of the funding for the projects has come from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund (LTF), with the remainder from Pembrokeshire County Council.

Announcing the funding, the Minister for the Economy, Science and Transport, Edwina Hart, said: “This financial support to local authorities will help them deliver transport improvements in their area that serve the needs of businesses, people and communities."

Mid and West Wales Assembly Member Rebecca Evans welcomed the announcement, saying that she hoped the cash boost would help local councils put in place safer routes, and encourage more people to “choose a healthy lifestyle” by walking or cycling.
