A LIFELONG Elvis fan who ‘always saw the good in people’ has been tragically killed in a hit and run incident while in Memphis for a concert celebrating the superstar’s life.

Penycwm grandmother Andrea Baker was killed on her 54th birthday following a concert by an Elvis impersonator, just a mile away from the legendary Heartbreak Hotel.

Andrea, who was well known in the Haverfordwest area, had flown to the States to see Graceland – her second trip to the area after making friends with fellow fans more than five years ago.

Memphis police are still searching for the person who knocked Andrea down as she crossed the road after they fled the scene.

Elvis impersonator and Andrea's friend, Joe Kent, described what happened on the night of May 19: "We hugged and said our good nights and I left her in the hotel parking lot.

"She evidently went back in the hotel and got on their computer in the lobby.

"Then she must have gone back outside. That's when it happened. She was killed by a hit and run driver.

"It's just so sad."

He sang Happy Birthday to Andrea and did a rendition of her favourite song Yesterday, When I was Young at that night’s concert.

It has been reported that Andrea left her fellow Elvis fans in the concert to check birthday messages from her family back home in Wales.

After the gig, fellow fans offered to walk her back to the hotel - but she said she was going to walk.

She was crossing East Brooks Road in Memphis when she was knocked down and killed by a driver who then sped off.

Joe Kent and Andrea's other friends have been to visit the scene "where the angels took her" and lay floral tributes.

In Milford Haven Andrea’s daughter Shaz Ahmed and her boyfriend Matthew Francis paid tribute to a ‘kind and loving woman’.

“It was a tragic accident,” said Matthew.

“She was on holiday visiting friends. Everyone knows Andrea is a big Elvis fan - she went out there five or six years ago for the first time and made some friends; she saved up for a long time to go to America.

“Everybody around town knew who Andrea was and a lot of people recognised her. She volunteered with MIND.

“She was kind and loving, she wouldn’t hurt a soul and she always saw the good in people. Andrea was one of life’s nice people and she never had a bad word to say about anybody.

“She was a well known, loving person and she is going to be sadly missed.”

The family are now in the process of bringing Andrea home from the US before arrangements for her funeral are made.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We were made aware of the death of a British national on 19 May in America.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."
