Six ‘super citizens’ will be rewarded for their hard work in the local community at an award ceremony in Milford Haven today (Saturday, June 7).

Sixty-one-year-old Pat Farrar, from Hakin, is one of four women nominated to receive an Adults’ Citizen’s Award from Milford Haven Town Council at the ceremony, which will take place at the Town Hall.

She was picked for her years of hard work with the Talking Mercury – an audio newspaper for blind or partially-sighted people.

Pat, who has been totally blind for 15 years, set up the paper in a single room in Milford Haven, and still works with her team of loyal volunteers to produce the weekly paper, which is sent out on memory sticks to its readers.

Pat said the paper was a vital resource for people with sight problems.

“Without the paper, people would have no idea what’s going on locally,” she said.

Asked how she felt about being nominated, Pat said: “It was quite a shock!”

Sue Kenny, 69, will also receive an award from the Mayor on Saturday.

A trustee and volunteer at Milford Haven Museum, Sue is also well known for her work with campaign group Save Essential Services at Withybush.

A mother and grandmother, the former nurse said she felt compelled to help as she ‘couldn’t bear to see what the government was doing in Pembrokeshire and across Wales’.

“I just wanted to get out there and do what I can,” she said.

“I’m very lucky that I have got the time to spend campaigning. For me it’s a fight that has to be fought.”

Accepting an award ahead of her retirement later this month will be 2nd Milford Haven St Katherine’s Brownies leader Marion Sizer.

Originally a Brownie and Guide herself, Marion has helped teach cooking, crafts, swimming and other skills to local girl for almost 30 years.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute, it’s been an absolute pleasure, there have been some wonderful girls come through the ranks,” she said.

On being nominated, Marion said she was “thrilled to bits, but very humbled by it”.

Also due to receive an award is long-serving Cancer Research volunteer Susan Norman, Receiving Youth Awards will be Petty Office Cadets Daniel Tucker and Callum Snape.

Callum, 17, has been with Milford Haven Sea Cadets for six years, and said he would recommend the experience to anyone.

“It’s boosted my self confidence, and made me eager to get out and do things. It’s also been great for my social life; I’m not stuck with just one group of friends. It’s made me more independent too,” he said.
