More than 700 Pembrokeshire people will travel to Cardiff on Wednesday to oppose planned Welsh Government changes to services at Withybush Hospital.

The Save Withybush Action Team (SWAT) and other protesters are to descend of the Senedd in large numbers in an attempt to get the powers that be to listen to genuine fears that lives will be lost if health service changes go ahead.

Plans to move consultant obstetrics, full paediatric cover and the special care baby unit from Withybush and replacing them with a three bed midwife led unit have met with opposition from clinicians, residents and opposition politicians.

The Labour Welsh Government has backed the health board’s view that the changes will provide “safe and sustainable” services in Pembrokeshire.

A Judicial Review into how the plans were established will be held later this month.

The thousands of people who have attended numerous SWAT demonstrations, in Haverfordwest and Cardiff, have all voiced their fears that without theses essential services lives will be lost.

Next Wednesday (June 18) buses filled with campaigners will head to Cardiff once again and protest outside the Senedd.

It is hoped that even more people attend following an impressive turnout of more than 800 at March’s Cardiff protest.

Pick up points will be arranged in Haverfordwest (01437 762400), Milford Haven, Neyland, Johnston (01646 694169), Pembroke Dock, Kilgetty (01437 766215), St Davids, Solva (01437 766215), Fishguard, Dinas, Letterston (01348 875517), Crymych, Cardigan, Newport (01239 820971) and Narberth (01834 861322).

The call to arms on SWAT’s poster states: “Take the day off and bring your children. One day may make all the difference to your future health.

“Demand that the Welsh Government retains all services in Withybush Hospital to keep Pembrokeshire people safe. This is possible if we all want it and want it badly enough.”
