A peek into a poet’s past is awaiting you at Oriel y Parc, Saint David’s this weekend.

A replica of Dylan Thomas’ writing shed will be visiting the city’s gallery and visitor centre today, Saturday, July 5, and Sunday, July 6.

It is on a tour of Wales as part of Dylan Thomas 100, the year-long festival of celebrations commemorating the writer’s birth.

The shed’s visit to Oriel y Parc is part of the events programme for the current free exhibition Llareggub: Sir Peter Blake illustrates Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood. It features 170 portraits, watercolours and collages by pop art master Sir Peter Blake, depicting Thomas’s most loved play.

Visitors will be invited to invent a new word and definition to add to a “Dictionary for Dylan” compiled as the shed tours the country.

Paula Ellis, manager of Oriel y Parc, said: “We are honoured that the Dylan Thomas Mobile Writing Shed is coming as part of this nationwide tour.

“The shed at Laugharne was for Dylan Thomas what the National Park is for many artists – a place of sanctuary and a source of huge inspiration.

“We hope people will make the most of a rare opportunity to glimpse how a great cultural hero of Wales created his work and combine it with a fantastic exhibition by one of Britain’s greatest living artists, Sir Peter Blake, who took his inspiration from Dylan Thomas himself.”

Dylan Thomas lived at the boathouse at Laugharne for the last four years of his life. There he wrote some of his most famous work including the poem Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night and his play for voices, Under Milk Wood.

The shed’s visit to Saint David’s is supported by the Friends of Oriel y Parc.
