Crowds lined Fishguard Square on Sunday afternoon for a parade and service to remember the start of the First World War.

Goodwick Brass Band led the parade from the catholic school to the square, followed by Fishguard Sea Cadets, the town’s Army Cadets and representatives from the scouting movement and the Royal British Legion. Lord Lieutenant for Dyfed, Robin Lewis, took the salute on the Golden Mile.

The parade was followed by a commemorative service on Fishguard Square. Alex Morgan from Goodwick Brass Band played the Last Post and pupils from Ysgol Bro Gwaun gave moving readings of letters from home and from the front. A wreath was laid at the Cenotaph by the Lord Lieutenant.

The event was organised by Fishguard and Goodwick town council and the Royal British Legion.

“I thought it was wonderful,” said mayor Mike Lloyd. “The weather was good, it was well organised and the speeches were excellent.

“The 17-year-olds from Ysgol Bro Gwaun spoke particularly well. The sea cadets and army cadets were wonderful. People have worked very hard in the background to get this event going. The support from the community has been great. That’s what it’s all about.”

Gwilym Price from the Royal British Legion said he was “absolutely delighted” with the event.

“It was great the way the day went,” he said. “It’s so important to remember these people. I think everybody did very well and the young people were terrific.”
