CALLS for the chief executive of Pembrokeshire County Council to resign are again echoing around the county following the recent conviction of a former youth worker of child sex offences.

Michael ‘Mik’ Smith was sentenced earlier this month to six years in prison for abusing a child after he was sacked from the local authority.

In a BBC Week In, Week Out programme tonight (Tuesday July 13 BBC1 Wales, 10.35pm) whistleblower Sue Thomas said she had warned bosses about Smith’s inappropriate behaviour and raised concerns he posed a risk in 2005 but he was only given a verbal warning.

Further complaints were made about him in 2009 and 2011.

Labour Regional AM Joyce Watson told the programme that chief executive Bryn Parry-Jones should step down following this latest scandal.

Smith was sacked in 2012 following a CSSIW and Estyn investigation which was highly critical of the safeguarding procedures at the county council.

Mrs Watson told Week In, Week Out: “I think it’s time for him to go and I’m not fighting shy of saying that.

“He has been the permanency in all of the negative reports that have been there and there have been a number of them.

“You cannot be the highest paid chief executive in Wales because you are worth that money and preside over failure. Repeated failure.”

A council spokesman said: “The council’s investigation at the time revealed no evidence of criminal activity, and since that time the council has completely changed its procedures and management of the education department and is confident that past failings would not be repeated now.”

The buck stops with you Bryn, incompetence beyond belief and still you have the hide to stay. Anyone else would have been sacked long ago.

Bryn should be sacked. Someone needs to be made accountable. Someone needs to be charged with perverting the course of public justice. I agree with yuo Flashbang... the buck stops with Bryn.

so Is Jamie and the IPG shower going to go down the pay the most to get the best when it's a criminal matter, or will it be deemed "too expensive" to sack him if he doesn't resign - that will I guess be Bry'ns threat - take him on, he cannot claim wrongful dismissal.

Also where are the Police in this - funny hand shakes or not they are becoming a laughing stock in the sewers of Pembrokeshire - I certaINLY have no respect for them any more

I'm sure Cllr Adams is reassuring Bryn that he's quite safe from harm in the Kremlin and that the nasty ungrateful people of Pembrokeshire and beyond will soon give up writing those horrible and hurtful comments and forget all the shenanigans he condones.
Guess what?
Those good people of Pembrokeshire won't give up writing the truth and, as if it couldn't get any worse, will never forget.
Run away now, while you have the chance and take your entourage with you, I hear them Porsches are pretty roomy.

A shocking indictment of the Council and the Officers involved .I have rarely seen an investigative programme where the presenter has been so firmly condemnatory in his conclusions. It cannot be long before the Welsh Assembly assumes direct control of the administration of this County.............t
he sooner the better.Perhaps the new Secretary of State for Wales will use his newly acquired powers to this end.

Bryn Parry Jones needs to be held accountable for his actions, due to his negligence and obvious inability to protect the vulnerable children of Pembrokeshire, Mik Smith went on to abuse. No excuses, this should never have been allowed to happen. In house investigation is not the answer, send someone independent of Pembrokeshire council to investigate. Parents need to be informed of how this man groomed their kids before hearing the details via the media.

Let's be honest we all know how gossip spreads, so don't tell me that the 'people in power' hadn't heard along the grape vine what this man was like long before the whistleblower did her thing.

Turn a blind eye and it hasn't happened! They really believe it's not their problem. This is exactly how Pope John Paul reacted about abuse in the Catholic Church.

Problem is the insurance companies run the council. They advise on what to say and do as they expect litigation. So at the next election we should be voting for comparethemarket.com
