Milford Haven’s Market Square will once again be bustling with traders today (Saturday), when a new street market opens.

The market, which will run from 10am until 4pm every Saturday until Christmas, will feature a range of stalls, from sweets and gifts to garden tools and ladies' wear.

Mayor of Milford Haven Cllr Eric Harries said he could remember the square being a ‘bustling market’ when he was a child, and was thrilled to see it return.

“I’m certain that this sort of venture will facilitate the start of the regeneration of Charles Street,” he said.

“I sincerely hope the market will attract people from outside the town and boost the future of the town centre.

“I congratulate the Business Circle and the Town Team for all their hard work.”

Jointly funded by the Town Council and the Business Circle, the market has seen investment of £4,500 to get it up and running.

It will be managed by Charles Street shopkeeper Byron Jenkins, and other local traders will take on the responsibility of storing the stalls.

Business Circle chairman Lynne Turner said members had been critical in getting the market set up.

”It’s very easy to say ‘Oh, that’s a good idea’, but we’re really looking at the goodwill of members for it to take off,” she said.

Local town and county councillor Guy Woodham – who also chairs Milford Haven’s Town Team - said the market was in good hands.

“Who better to manage the market than those who manage their own businesses?” he said.

“I really hope the people of the town come out and support the market. It will be starting off small but with the support of the community there’s every opportunity for it to grow and become a permanent feature back in the town,” he added.
