THE family and friends of a tragic Fishguard teacher came together on what would have been her wedding day on Saturday, August 9.

Ysgol Glannau Gwaun hosted ‘Catrin’s Day’ in memory of the school’s former teacher Catrin Vaughan, who died in a car crash last April.

The 30 year-old from Crundale was due to marry Huw Thornton at St David’s Cathedral after getting engaged at Christmas, 2012.

The family fun day included a tug of war competition, It’s a Knockout, a bouncy castle, vintage tractors, the local fire engine and even an appearance from Buzz Lightyear and Woody.

As well as bringing together Catrin’s loved ones, the day also raised money for Ysgol Glannau Gwaun.

After Catrin's death, a foundation was set up in her name to benefit the learning resource centre at the school, where Catrin taught a dozen pupils with additional learning needs.

A tractor run held at Llys y Fran YFC at the end of June raised close to £11,000.

Speaking at Catrin’s Day, the headteacher of Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, Irwyn Wilcox said: “Today has been about providing a distraction for those of us who would have been at St David’s Cathedral and the Allt yr Afon enjoying her wedding day. That’s why we called it Catrin’s Day, because it would have been her day.

“It’s all about providing a different focus for friends, colleagues and hopefully the family on what should have been the greatest day of her life, and unfortunately isn’t anymore.”

Mr Wilcox added: “We’ve planted a commemorative tree on the school grounds and purchased a patio set in Catrin’s name, which was delivered to the school just before the end of term.”

The next event to benefit the foundation is a dance at the Allt yr Afon on September 12.
