Seals are not usually known for their hiking skills, but Jelly the young pup, found looking for her mum half a mile from Abereiddy, has been on quite a mission.

The exhausted seal was found in the early hours of Tuesday morning, September 2, by holiday makers in a cottage near to the beach.

At 3am the tourists were woken by a crying noise and discovered a seal pup at the back of the cottage.

They tried to go back to bed but kept worrying about the pup and went back out again, to find she had disappeared.

They went looking for her and found her underneath a car half a mile up the road heading towards St David's.

Terry Leadbetter from Welsh Marine Life Rescue arrived to take jelly at 4am, she was then handed over to RSPCA animal collection officer, Ellie West.

"Jelly was quite skinny and underweight," said Ellie. "She had been on quite an adventure trying to find mum, but she had strayed some distance from the coast. All she did was sleep when I got to her."

Jelly has now been taken to the RSPCA's West Hatch wildlife centre where she will be for some months until ready to be released back into the wild.

Members of the public who find a seal pup that looks fit and healthy and shows no signs of distress should first monitor from a safe distance for 24 hours. They are advised not to touch seal pups and keep dogs and other animals away from them.

If the mother does not return within 24 hours, or the pup seems sick or injured, it can be reported to the RSPCA's 24-hour cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.
