COUNTY councillors will have a chance to comment on a draft ‘vision’ for harbour services in Fishguard Lower Town and Tenby at a meeting in County Hall on Thursday (September 18).

The meeting of the council’s economy overview and scrutiny committee is part of an ongoing review of the two harbours.

As well as reviewing fees and charges, the authority has also been looking at the possibility of ‘transferring ownership and/or management responsibilities’ for the two sites.

The meeting follows a resolution by the committee in November 2013 that “future options in relation to private and voluntary sector involvement with the management of harbours be considered”.

Committee members will be asked to vote on a recommendation that the council seeks legal advice to establish the council’s responsibility as harbour authority, and whether ownership or management of the sites could be ‘transferred in part or in whole’.

The ‘draft vision’ being put to councillors will be to ‘provide vibrant, sustainable, safe and well-regulated harbours that contribute to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of local communities and the council’s tourism agenda’.

In deciding the future of the two harbours, members will need to take into consideration the views of harbour users, the fishing sector and visitors, as well as looking at the provision for youth development, watersports, competitions and events.
