A PUBLIC meeting will be held next month to talk about the possibility of building affordable homes and a new swimming pool in St Davids.

The St Davids Community Group was formed in 2009 during the controversial closure of the city’s original swimming pool.

Since then it has continued to work not only for the provision of a new pool and its funding, but also on related issues that have become apparent, such as the lack of good housing for local people, local employment, skills training and community facilities for the elderly.

The group has come up with a set of ideas for a community-led development and is now ready to share them with residents.

County Councillor David Lloyd said: “The ideas have reached such a stage now that it is planned to actively engage and consult with the people of St Davids and the wider community.”

An exhibition of the plans will go on display at St Davids City Hall on Wednesday, October 8 from10am, followed by a public meeting at 6pm.

The proposed site is Glasfryn Road, and the two landowners concerned are said to be willing supporters.

The scheme will be made up of housing units, which can be bought or rented at affordable prices. It also includes a swimming pool and a café is also being considered, specially designed for use by the older members of the community.

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Pembrokeshire County Council, Pembrokeshire Housing Association and the Welsh Government have been consulted at all stages and they have all declared their support in principle for the project.

Cllr Lloyd said: “The guiding principle of the scheme is that it should be sustainable, self-funding and driven by the community for the community.”

He added: “Being a community project, it will only proceed if it enjoys the overwhelming backing of the community.”
