A HAYSCASTLE soldier has run an incredible 10 marathons in 11 days in memory of his twin brother.

Corporal Christopher Gouldsmith crossed the finish line on Castle Square in Haverfordwest on Thursday afternoon, having set off from Kinloss in Scotland on September 15.

He was cheered on by members of his family, fellow servicemen and women and members of the public.

“I’m chuffed to bits to be here,” he said. “Looking at the map and how far we come, it feels amazing.”

Cpl Gouldsmith set himself the epic challenge following the loss of Lance Corporal Jonathan Gouldsmith, who was killed while on leave in April 2011.

He hopes to raise £20,000 for REME Charitable Trust, which helped support his family through the loss of Jonathan, and Combat Stress.

So far he has managed to collect around half of that amount through an auction held at Slebech Park, online donations and raffles tickets.

Cpl Gouldsmith was joined on the marathons by Rob Johns and Tom Hodges.

He said: “It was really tough having to wake up at 6.30 in the morning and knowing we had another marathon to run.

“We had some arguments when we were tired, but we stuck together as a team and pulled through.”

The trio had plans of trying to keep to a 10 minute mile pace, but they were soon slowed down by injures.

“There was one day when I couldn’t walk, said Cpl Gouldsmith, “one of the guys lost a toe nail and one had to jump on a bike due to injury, but he still wanted to do the distance with us.”

Cpl Gouldsmith’s sister Hannah, who was at the finishing line, said: “I’m really proud of Chris. I’ve been following his progress on the internet and I wanted to be here at the end.

“It’s unbelievable what he’s done, but he needed to do it.”
