A ROYAL visit by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is taking place at the Valero Pembroke Refinery this Saturday, November 8, as part of the site's 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Pembroke Refinery was officially opened in 1964 by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

It became the first major industrial employer in South Pembrokeshire since the closure of the Pembroke Dock in 1926.

This year celebrates the Refinery’s 50th anniversary and offers an opportunity to highlight the prosperity the Refinery has brought to the county, through employment and community engagement.

Upon arrival, Their Royal Highnesses will view a display which chronicles the 50 year history of the refinery and its relationship with the community.

Staff will down tool to meet their Royal Highnesses during their visit.

The Duke and Duchess will then visit the Control Room to meet blending and shipping workers, before proceeding to the Fire Hall to meet representatives from various community organisations who are supported by the refinery.

The visit will conclude with a performance by the Young Actors Studio which works in partnership with the refinery through The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Their Royal Highnesses will also unveil a plaque and a painting by a local artist upon departure.

In an email to staff, Valero general manager Ed Tomp said: “This is a huge honour for the whole refinery and recognition of the important role Pembroke Refinery and its workforce has played over 50 years, as well as the role it continues to play in supporting our economy and communities here in Pembrokeshire.”
