Pub doormen in Tenby are calling for a greater police presence in the town after last week’s incident where a group of drunken men tried to gatecrash a private party.

As the Western Telegraph revealed last week, the event to mark the 25th wedding anniversary of Tracie and Jimmy Cowan was tarnished by the behaviour of the men, several of whom were exposing themselves.

The party, in Tenby’s Ex-Serviceman’s Club, followed the blessing of the couple’s marriage in the town’s St Mary’s Church.

What police described as ‘a large-scale disorder’ erupted outside the club in South Parade just before 8.30pm on Saturday November 8.

Mrs Cowan, wearing her white wedding dress, was flung to the ground after she asked the men to behave themselves.

At least 10 doormen from pubs in Tenby rushed to the scene after being alerted, and one of them, who did not wish to be named, told the Western Telegraph this week: “If me and the boys had not turned up, someone who have been put in hospital or killed.”

The group of around 30 men, in their late teens or early twenties, were like ‘raging lunatics’, claimed the doorman.

“We realise that the police are under-staffed, but there are certainly not enough of them in Tenby,” he told the Western Telegraph.

“The mobile police station hasn’t been in Tudor Square since September. We are the ones that are keeping Tenby safe.”

Mr and Mrs Cowan have now had a personal visit from police who have shown them paperwork to prove that two officers were on the scene of the incident with two and a half minutes of the first call being made, and within 11 minutes there were 19 officers present.

“We now have a better picture of the police response time, and we are very appreciative of the police’s time,” said Mr Cowan.

“But I still feel that there should be more police in Tenby to deal with incidents like this.

“My wife and I are now working with the police to resolve the matter and get people charged, and to get an apology to us and our guests and to the people of Tenby over what they did in town on Saturday night.”

A Dyfed-Powys police spokeswoman said this week: “As there is an ongoing police investigation into the incident, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.

“We would ask the public not to speculate and wait for the police investigation to be completed.

“Anyone who was involved in the incident, or has information that could help the investigation, is asked to contact Tenby police on 101.”
