Several CCTV or webcam cameras in a small Pembrokeshire village appear to be among thousands across the world hacked into and placed on the internet.

Among the 584 United Kingdom cameras accessed and broadcast live on a website are 12 purportedly based in Hook, near Haverfordwest.

The Russian-based site – which the Western Telegraph is not identifying – claims to have accessed CCTV, webcams and even baby monitors across the world.

The site lists streams from more than 200 countries.

The site seems to have targeted cameras which can be remotely accessed by owners over the internet that have either never changed their default passwords or have no password protection at all.

The Western Telegraph cannot verify whether the cameras identified as being from Hook are actually based in the village but the cameras are posted alongside a Google Map pointing to an area near Haverfordwest.

The site also carries the longitude and latitude of the cameras, which does appear to correlate with an area near Haverfordwest.

There are 12 cameras claiming to be in the Hook area.

Most of the cameras show a static image but do not appear to be actually broadcasting live footage.

Among the 12 ‘Hook’ cameras are static images of a child’s bedroom, a living room, office and several vehicles on driveways.

The Information Commissioners Office said it was unable to halt the website as it is beyond the UK’s borders.

Security experts always recommend changing equipment from default settings and creating strong passwords.
