Haverfordwest's popular Skatepark will celebrate its first anniversary today (Sunday December 14).

Following eight years of hard work by registered charity Haverfordwest Skatepark Association (HSA), what has become one of the most successful new facilities in Pembrokeshire finally opened last year.

“It is hard to imagine our county town without a Skatepark now,” said HSA chairman Geraint Williams. “One year on, the use of the Skatepark has exceeded everyone’s expectations. It has been phenomenal to see people’s skills develop. The camaraderie between the users has been fantastic, with many stories of the more experienced riders supporting those less able.”

Enthusiasts from all over the UK have made the trip to Pembrokeshire to experience the free to use facility, planting the county firmly on the wheeled sports circuit map.

Over 400 people attended its official “Opening Jam” – supported by both local and national sponsors - in May, and the event was also the setting for the second official National Action Sports and Music Festival (NASS) qualifier of the season, an endorsement the Skatepark shared with only six other facilities in the UK. Several local riders were selected to compete, and a number have been sponsored by companies in the skating industry.

BMX rider Connor Hynes, a regular user of the Skatepark, said: “I think the Skatepark’s great because it brings a lot of people together! It provides a very good atmosphere with people all ages just having fun.”

Josh Phillips, another keen BMX-er, said the facility has had a “huge influence” on him.

“It’s also really benefited the town,” he enthused. “Not only has the park attracted people from around the country but has provided a safe and friendly area where young people can develop their skills.”

As the Skatepark’s first birthday approaches, there is a lot to celebrate. The HSA plans to keep it running as it is, while continuing to build on its success.

“The HSA still needs to raise around £3000 a year to cover insurances, lighting and maintenance costs,” said HSA secretary Alison Turner. “We need public support, as there are no ongoing funds from local councils or any other current source. The venture has always been a community project and the HSA would love to hear from anyone willing to sponsor or support the Skatepark in any way they can.”
