A MILFORD Haven author returned to his old stomping ground recently, to share his story with local schoolchildren.

Anthony Ormond visited Milford Haven School to talk to pupils about his debut novel, time-travel adventure ‘Tommy Parker: Destiny will find you!’, which is based on his days as a student there.

The book tells the story of 12-year-old Tommy Parker, who inherits a magical pen from his Grandpa that enables him to enter into his memories – and alter them too.

And so begins a dangerous battle through time where Tommy and his friends have to protect the pen from a deadly cult who will stop at nothing to use it to unleash an unspeakable evil into the world.

Now living in Cardiff and working as a solicitor, the 36-year-old said much of the book is based on his own childhood in Pembrokeshire.

“Most of the incidents or scrapes that Tommy and his friends get into, I actually got up to as a boy,” he said.

“Readers will recognise a lot of local Pembrokeshire landmarks and there are also plenty of Milford characters mentioned in it too - some I've changed the names of and some I haven't - I hope that the latter will forgive me!”

Pupils took part in a ‘time travel quiz’, were treated to an excerpt from the book, and had the opportunity to ask Anthony about how he became a writer.

Anthony said he had been very impressed with the students’ enthusiasm, and said it was vital that children with a passion for storytelling were encouraged from a young age.

“It always amazes me the enthusiasm they have for writing even at this young age,” he said.

“Their imaginations are amazing.”

He was also keen to stress the importance of practice in developing his craft.

“Everyone can enjoy writing, even people who struggle with it,” he said.

“There’s no need for natural talent, if you enjoy it and have a story to tell, just go for it.”

Librarian Julie Hudson said Anthony's visit had been great, as it allowed children to learn about the process behind writing a book.

"Seeing someone local who has achieved so much is inspirational," she said.

Anthony already has plans for a follow-up to Tommy Parker: Destiny will find you!, which is available as a Kindle download and in paperback.
