Narberth’s proposed new retail and housing scheme on the site of the town’s old primary school looks set to be given the go-ahead by county planners today (Tuesday).

The Western Telegraph understands that the application for the development - which will include a Sainsbury’s Local convenience store earmarked for the largest of several ground-floor retail units - is being recommended for approval at today's meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning and rights of way committee.

An invitation-only meeting was held last Monday in County Hall when representatives of community umbrella group, Narberth Future Forum, were given a presentation by the developers, |Abbeymore Estates and Knox & Wells Limited, and architects on the overall design and the latest changes that have been made to them.

The Forum team reiterated their concerns on the reduction of parking, HGV and goods vehicle access, proposed retail offerings, community events and future long-term provisions.

Said Forum secretary Gordon Barry: “The Forum again expressed dismay that there had been no meaningful consultation with the local community, apart from a presentation to the town council in April 2014.

“It was felt by the Forum that the local knowledge and constructive comments available would have helped formulating the specifics of the project, and expressed sadness that there had been no public meeting to explore any concerns.”
