ST DAVIDS City Hall was jam-packed this evening (Monday) as more than 200 people turned out to protest against the proposed closure of Ysgol Dewi Sant.

The public meeting was chaired by County Councillor David Lloyd who said he was as distraught as everyone else at the news he received on Thursday.

“My heart is broken,” he said.

“This is devastating and the fact that you have turned out in your numbers shows how feel about it.”

He handed the floor over to Caroline Blair, a chemistry teacher at Ysgol Dewi Sant.

She said: “I called this meeting at very short notice on Friday because I sat in a staff meeting where we were given the recommendations that have come out of the 10 proposals.

“As teachers we were on the floor because we have worked ourselves into the ground to improve standards and get a good Estyn inspection.

"We’ve done all that and still we find out they want to close our school – the best school in Pembrokeshire.”

She added that it’s now over to the people of St Davids to fight this cause.

Alaric Churchill is a regular at the public meetings concerning the future of Ysgol Dewi Sant.

He said: “We had a meeting with the Director of Education’s assistant. In that meeting did they not say that they could not and would not close the best school in Pembrokeshire?

“We have become the best school, so they lied to us in a public meeting.”

Canon Dorrien Davies was also in attendance. He said: “Pembrokeshire County Council’s proposal has failed the young in this community. It’s an absolute disgrace. Those who abstain and vote against us on Thursday should be ashamed of themselves.”
