A meeting to examine the future of secondary education in Haverfordwest will take place this evening Monday, March 2.

The meeting, at Sir Thomas Picton (STP) School Hall, will be a chance for parents, governors, pupils and members of the public to discuss proposed changes to STP and Tasker Milward School.

Pembrokeshire County Council is currently looking at creating a new ‘super school’ on the STP site for Tasker Milward and STP pupils.

However, the plan is for sixth formers then going on to Pembrokeshire College.

But concerned parents and students have set up a Facebook group called ‘Haverfordwest Pupils Demand a Sixth-Form’, demanding that pupils at both schools be allowed to choose where they study A-levels.

So far, the group has more than 1,300 members.

Speaking last month, former Tasker Milward pupil, Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb MP, said: “The proposals for Haverfordwest also don’t look right to me.

“Personally speaking, I believe that Haverfordwest has benefited greatly from having two secondary schools and I would be desperately sad if Tasker Milward were ever to close.”

Supporters of St Davids School, which was initially threatened with closure as part of the proposals, have already started a steering group to try and save the city’s sixth form.

The meeting is set to start at 7pm and anyone with an interest in Tasker Milward or Sir Thomas Picton is urged to attend to air their views.
