JOHN Street in Neyland will be closed for three days during the Easter holidays, as £22,000 worth of resurfacing work is carried out.

At a meeting of Neyland’s town council on Monday, Mayor Cllr Simon Hancock welcomed the news, saying the county council had recognised the heavy traffic flow to the school and the athletic club, and had agreed to a ‘huge concession’ despite shrinking budgets.

But town councillors said there were several other roads in the town in a ‘terrible condition’, which also needed addressing.

Among them was the lane leading off High Street, near the Premier store.

Cllr Hancock said he had been told the lane would cost around £8,000 to resurface, and proposed that the town council pay for it ‘in the spirit of partnership’.

Cllr Judith Wilson said this would start a precedent, in which the county council would expect the town council to carry out future road works.

But Cllr Hancock said the argument of ‘let the county council do it’ didn’t work any longer, as the authority’s budget did not allow for it to carry out all necessary works.

Work on John Street is scheduled to start on Tuesday, April 7, and a spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council said: “As the street is used as the main access and exit to and from the school, the work - which will take up to three days - has been arranged to coincide with the school holiday.”
