A YOUNG man with a passion for making coffee has won himself a national title and a trip to America.

Sam Harries, 21, has worked as a barista for Marks and Spencer for five years and recently pitched his skills against the best in the business.

The Marks and Spencer Barista of the Year competition invited entries from coffee shops across the UK. 120 baristas put themselves forward by submitting a two minute video of them in action and Sam was one of four chosen to compete in the final on February 26.

While being judged on their skill, presentation and personality, the finalists had to produce espressos, cappuccinos, lattes and a signature drink.

Sam said: “I have a bit of a sweet tooth so I made a salted caramel and pecan frappe.”

After stiff competition, Sam was named the winner for 2015.

As part of his prize, he has been invited to watch the Barista World Championships which are taking place in Seattle on April 13.

“The ironic thing is I’m going on holiday to America at the same time,” said Sam, “so I’ll already be there.

“I’ve never been to Seattle before and I’m really looking forward it.”

Asked what he loves about his job, Sam said: “You get to interact with customers and get to know them on a personal level.

“They’re expecting good quality drinks, so there’s a bit of pressure to deliver that.

“I came to M&S straight from home school and I’ve loved it so much that I’ve stayed. There’s always room to develop into management, and I’ve become a coach and recruiter.”

Sam now has his sights set on the 2016 UK Barista Championships.

“I want to see where coffee takes me. I’m so passionate about it and I’d love to see if there’s a future for me in the industry,” he said.
