As a new set of road works plunged Haverfordwest into commuter chaos this morning, Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed that work at Churnworks Roundabout has been completed.

Road works at the roundabout began last summer. The new traffic system is designed to improve traffic flow and pedestrian access in conjunction with the proposed Sainsbury’s development off Thomas Parry Way.

A county council spokesman confirmed this morning that the work at the Churnworks is complete and the site is being cleared up. New traffic lights will be operational from 10am on Monday.

“The works have actually finished,” said the spokesman. “The contractors are in the process of demobilising the site - that is clearing away equipment, tidying up etc.

“The traffic lights are then due to undergo safety tests in readiness to commence operation at 10 am on Monday when there will be an engineer on site to monitor them.”

The news comes on a day when motorists were baffled by the closure of the Withybush bound lane of Sydney Rees Way and a diversion via Scotchwell.

The new road works are to allow for resurfacing work on Sydney Rees Way in the road between the Morrisons roundabout and the roundabout next to the Withybush retail park.

The work is expected to last eight days and will take place between 7.30am to 6pm, with no weekend work anticipated. A diversion via Scotchwell Roundabout and the A40 is in place.

Pembrokeshire County Council Cabinet Member for Transportation, Councillor Rob Lewis, apologised for the disruption which will be caused to road users but added: “This is essential work which is being carried out and we will endeavour to keep delays to a minimum.”

Resurfacing work on the carriageway outside Withybush Hospital is due to start around March 26.
