Local children and parents flocked to Goodwick Parrog park in the spring sunshine last weekend to test out the eagerly awaited new play equipment.

The equipment was installed on Thursday much to the delight of Fishguard and Goodwick families. It replaces the old wooden equipment which was removed by the Pembrokeshire County Council at the end of last year after rot was discovered in parts of the structure.

A public outcry over the state of the parks in the twin towns ensued and a Save Our Playgrounds Group was set up. Although the council would not initially confirm if the park would be replaced, it subsequently found money for new equipment in its playground maintenance budget.

Six designs were put to the public vote, with a ship-themed multi activity apparatus the favourite.

Installation of the new equipment began in early March and was finished at the end of last week.

“I’m delighted,” said co-founder of the Save our Playgrounds group Dani O Connor. “I’ve seen loads of pictures of kids enjoying it. “It’s absolutely fantastic. I’m so excited. I can’t wait to get started on the next project now.”

Goodwick county councillor Gwilym Price echoed her sentiments:

“I’m absolutely delighted that we have got this,” he said. “It’s going to be so useful for local children and children that come here on holiday. It’s a great boost for the local area.”

A meeting of the playgrounds group to decide what direction the campaign will take next will take place on Saturday April 11, at 2.30pm at the Ocean Lab. For more information visit their Facebook page.
