A new library located in Haverfordwest's Riverside market would generate £1million in increased trade and lead to the creation of a possible eight to 15 additional full time jobs.

Cabinet members were told on Monday, that the creation of a 21st Century technologically rich County Library, a visitor centre, a cafe and gallery would attract more than 200,000 visitors to the town centre a year.

It was to be considered in the light of an emerging "master plan" for the regeneration of the county town.

A report by Dr Steven Jones, director of development, suggested that the new library development could provide a catalyst for other Haverfordwest regeneration projects.

A possible partnership with the National Library of Wales (NLW) could potentially attract £300,000 of welsh Government funding.

Cabinet members were assured that the 17 traders at the market would be supported in their transition into new premises within the town. That support would be extended for a period of two years.

"We are not in the business of putting businesses out of business," said Dr Jones.

Cabinet voted to send the proposal to the Economy Overview and Scrutiny committee to look at it in the context of the master plan and at what it would mean for the market traders.

"I would welcome a little more information in terms of the traders," he said."I don't want to cast businesses adrift."

Cabinet approved the proposal to create a county library and information centre at the Riverside Market.

They agreed that officers should be authorised to secure suitable alternative accommodation for the market traders, work with the traders in surrendering their current occupation agreements, prepare and submit a planning application and seek an in principle agreement with the National Library of Wales and/or other potential partners.
