A LOCAL radio DJ will celebrate his 28th birthday by raising money for a charity helping children with neurological conditions.

James Southon, who lives in Haverfordwest, will be among the thousands of runners tackling the London Marathon this Sunday (April 26).

After completing the Llanelli half-marathon last year, the Radio Pembrokeshire presenter said he swore he would never run again, but was convinced to pull on his trainers again when he heard about national charity Cerebra.

"When I looked into the brilliant work Cerebra does with children suffering with neurological problems both locally and nationally I felt obliged to step up," said James.

"Cerebra's hands-on approach to helping these kids dealing with brain injuries is staggering. And it doesn't stop there with the youngsters, but is also proactive in providing support for families caring for their kids on a daily basis.

"A great example of this is the charity's holiday home in Hook, which offers families some respite and the chance to create more happy, family memories.

"They really do make such a massive difference."

As part of his training, James once again took on the Llanelli half-marathon - this time completing it in around 1hr 45 minutes - and has been getting advice on exercise and nutrition.

"There's no way I could have got this far without help from Simon Roach and Owain Rolands of Strength Academy Wales (SAW) in Haverfordwest," said James.

"Training has been very painful, and full-on at times - as the many drivers who have driven past me and seen me in a sweaty mess while I was clocking up the miles between Haverfordwest and Camrose can testify!"

James is almost half-way to his £1,000 target, and said reaching the milestone would be 'the best birthday present ever'.
