A Pembrokeshire adventurer has escaped the devastating effects of the massive earthquake that hit Nepal on Saturday, despite being on Everest when the quake struck.

Former Tasker Milward pupil, Deri Llewellyn-Davies, was one of a team of 11 adventurers striking out for the summit.

En route they planned to break the Guinness World Record for the highest formal black tie dinner party, which was to be cooked by Michelin Star Chef Sat Bains. The record breaking attempt has now been abandoned in the light of Saturday's tragic events.

The group had left Intermediate Camp and were heading towards Advanced Basecamp when the earthquake hit Nepal. They felt the tremors but none of the team was hurt.

On Monday they were still at Advanced Basecamp, as the government has shut parts of the mountain. They were hoping to arrive at Basecamp on Tuesday.

A voice message from Deri on Saturday confirmed that the group was safe and on the north side of the mountain, which had not been so badly affected by the earthquake.

"We did feel the earthquake significantly on our side of the mountain," he said. "It didn't have the devastating effect it had on the south side and our condolences go out everybody on the south side of the mountain, we are thinking of you all right now, and to everyone in Kathmandu.

"The whole party is safe on the north side of the mountain. We are currently in advance base camp and we don't know how long we will be here. God Bless everyone on the south side our thoughts are with you. "

Bestselling author and CEO of Business Growth International Deri is described as a "committed adventurer". He has climbed five of the seven summits, completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables and completed the Epic Ironman.

Writing in his blog before departure he said that Everest had been a dream of his since childhood.

"I'm going to one of the most dangerous places on earth and there is always a danger when doing these things that I (or a team member) could be seriously injured or even die," he wrote. "Everest has been one of the biggest decisions of my life."
