PARENTS of the 126 children at Ysgol Gynradd Eglwyswrw have received a letter informing them that the school’s headteacher, Mrs Shan Harries, has been sacked due to a breach in discipline.

Mrs Harries was suspended from the school last June. Subsequently an independent investigation was commissioned by Pembrokeshire County Council. Police were not involved in the investigation process.

Last December, a meeting was held between parents and Kate Evan-Hughes, Pembrokeshire County Council’s director for children and schools, in an attempt to allay parents’ concerns.

The investigation concluded in February; however the entire process has only just been completed. Mrs Harries was removed from her position as a result of the investigation.

The Western Telegraph understands that the matter has now been referred to the Education Workforce Council, previously known as the General Teaching Council for Wales.

In a letter to parents, chairman of governors, Alwyn Evans assured them that there was no evidence of any risk to children’s safety during Mrs Harries’ time as headteacher.

“This has been a difficult period for Mrs Harries, staff and members of the governing body,” he wrote.

“It is hoped that all concerned can now move forward in a positive manner in the best interests of the pupils at the school.”

Pembrokeshire County Council confirmed that Mrs Harries’ contract had been terminated as a result of a breach in discipline.

“The reason for her dismissal was not related to child protection issues,” said a council spokesman. “As this is an individual staffing matter, we will not be commenting further.”

Tim Davies is currently the acting head of the school and the position of headteacher has been recently advertised by the council. The closing date for applications is early June, with interviews taking place on June 23. The position is advertised to commence in September or sooner.

Speaking to the Western Telegraph, Mr chair of the board of governors, Alwyn Evans said: “It is a shame that this has happened. I feel for the parents and I feel for Mrs Harries.

“As chairman of the board of governors, I am happy that the process has been followed right through, with due diligence and in the correct way."
