A LOCAL scholar has won the prestigious Drama Medal at the 2015 Urdd National Eisteddfod.

Ffion Williams of Llanychllwydog is studying a master’s degree in Celtic Studies at Jesus College, Oxford, with a focus on Welsh mythology. She is a past pupil of Ysgol y Preseli, and graduated last year with a first class honours degree from Bangor University.

Ffion has already started to make her mark in the field of drama and literature. She won the Drama Medal at the Intercollegiate Eisteddfod, and has won the Young Farmer’s Society chair three times.

As well as writing plays and enjoying her studies, Ffion is a talented musician. She has been a member of Goodwick Brass Band for many years and has played for both the Welsh and European Youth Brass Bands. She is also a keen actress.

Ffion plans to study for a doctorate in Welsh, but before then is keen to experience life in the ‘real world’ and work if possible in the theatre or the arts.

The Drama Medal is awarded for writing a one-act stage play taking no more than 40 – 60 minutes to perform. Ffion competed under the nom de plume Liszt with a piece of work called Libersträume, which examines the relationship between a piano teacher and his pupil.

According to the adjudicators, Elen Bowman and Dafydd James, Ffion is a “mature, theatrical dramatist who understands the craft” and who “fully deserves the Medal in a strong competition.”
