The daughter of a man who received care support and lifesaving treatment at Withybush’s Chemotherapy Day Unit and Ward 10 is today (Wednesday) picking the winner in a fundraising raffle for cancer facilities at the hospital.

Pembroke Dock Community School pupil, Elly Neville, recently won first prize in a competition at school by making a collage of the Pembrokeshire Flag.

She decided to raffle her award-winning effort to raise vital funds for the planned upgrade of cancer services at Withybush.

Five-year-old Elly’s day Lyn was a patient at the Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) and Ward 10 after a bone marrow transplant in 2005.

Both Lyn and his wife Ann were full of praise for the dedicated staff and facilities at the hospital.

“Ward 10 was a safety net to us during Lyn’s treatment and recovery,” said Ann. “Staff were always on hand to provide reassurance and support at an anxious and frightening time. That great care, support and advice were only a short trip away and as a family we will never forget the care we received.”

Lyn added: “The CDU and Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital have played an important part in the lives of cancer patients in Pembrokeshire and their families over many years. With funding in place for the expansion and refurbishment of the CDU and Hywel Dda University Health Board committed to the upgrade of Ward 10, we as a family are pleased to be doing what we can to support the planned developments.”

Elly hoped to raise £500 for Ward 10. However she has smashed through that total, raising more than £2,000.

The winner of the flag will be announced at 6pm today. Entries can still be made right up to the draw.
