ONE of the favourites to become the new leader of the Labour Party visits local supporters this weekend with a message that he wants to re-establish the “emotional connection” between Labour and Wales.

Andy Burnham MP is heading to Whitland on Saturday to meet local Labour members and supporters.

Mr Burnham, who is the MP for Leigh, told the Western Telegraph his visit is as much about listening to people in west Wales as anything else.

“I’m looking forward to visiting this part of Wales; Labour needs to win people back in areas like Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire and the purpose of the visit is to listen to people.

“ It’s about saying we have to face up to the fact that Labour has lost its emotional connection to the people of Wales.

"We lost votes to the Tories, to UKIP, to Plaid in some places and I want to understand the reasons for that.”

Mr Burnham, who has found memories of visiting Tenby as a child, said he felt the party had been too ‘London-centric’ for too long and would look to change that if he is successful in his bid to lead the party and take on David Cameron.

Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire Assembly candidate Marc Tierney said: “I’m pleased that Andy Burnham has chosen listen to the views of west Wales members and supporters.

“I’m already engaging with local voters to listen to their concerns and act upon them.

The event is open to all members and supporters but spaces are limited.
