A group of Pembrokeshire villagers formed a 'human shield' around the victim of a horrific axe attack in Solva, the Western Telegraph has learned.

Police were alerted to the incident at around midday on Sunday (July 5) in Solva and arrested a 39 year-old man.

The victim has been named locally as David Swan.

He was rushed to Withybush Hospital having suffered multiple injuries.

An email circulated to a group of villagers after the attack, seen by the Western Telegraph, said: “Many of you may already have heard that David was attacked yesterday with an axe, in his home and in The George.

“Such a shocking and terrifying ordeal for them all.”

The email goes on to say that Mr Swan suffered serious wounds to his back and arm and had undergone a six hour operation.

One local, who did not wish to be named, said he saw Mr Swan covered in blood.

“I ran over to support a group of people who were already helping by forming a 'human shield' between the two of them. The attacker shouted obscenities and accusations.

“Mr Swan was taken into a house to wait for an ambulance whilst the attacker remained in the street in an agitated state before returning to The George.

The witness added: “My wife was on the phone to the police during it all, giving them a running commentary.”

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said: “We are continuing to investigate an incident of assault that occurred in Solva at approximately midday on Sunday, July 5. A man sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, and remains there.

"His injuries aren’t believed to be life threatening.

“Officers would like to reassure the community that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"We ask that anyone who was in the area, and in particular inside The George pub, between 11am and 12.45pm contact police by calling 101, as you may have information that would assist the investigation.”
