GOODWICK was invaded by Celtic longboats on Saturday, June 27 as the ever popular Dinas Head Rowing Challenge returned for another year.

A large crowd gathered on the Parrog to cheer on the 30 boats which competed in the eight mile timed race to Newport.

Race organiser Pete Fletcher said: “First hosted by Newport Boat Club back in 2001, the race has become a favourite annual event, with rowing clubs taking part from as far away as Mumbles, Aberystwyth, and Wisemans Bridge, along with local teams from Cardigan, Newport, Fishguard, Llanion and Solva.

“Such is the popularity of the event that for the first time ever it attracted a club from Arklow in Southern Ireland who competed in the single yole category.”

The Aberystwyth men’s team set the fastest time of the day in 61 minutes and 18 seconds.

The other category winners were: Yole (D) – Mumbles; Mixed – Solva; Yole (S) – Arklow; Junior – Newport; Men (V) – Solva; Open – Newport; Ladies – Newport; Mixed (SV) – Aberaeron; Ladies (V) – Wisemans Bridge.

Mr Fletcher added: “Thanks go to the Fishguard and District Round Table for their assistance on the day. It was very much appreciated.”
