A shamed former police officer was jailed today (Friday) for a series of sex offences.

Retired cop John Caffrey, 71, was described as "devastating" the then teenage girl's life.

Swansea Crown Court heard how photographs of her naked with his truncheon were distributed around pubs in Haverfordwest.

Caffrey denied all the allegations - and claimed he was "very angry" when he realised the truncheon pictures had been passed around pubs.

He claimed the girl made up her claims of years of sex abuse by Caffrey while he was working as a PC.

But Caffrey was jailed for three and a half years today after being convicted of a series of sex crimes and indecent assaults on the girl.

Judge Peter Heywood told him: "You engaged in a systematic campaign of abuse, blighting her teenage years.

"You have destroyed her trust in people and caused irreversible damage. In short you have destroyed her life.

"The abuse took place in her teenage years.

"She described a catalogue of abuse at your hands. It had a devastating effect."

The judge said: "You got her to pose for you. You took photographs of her in a bath full of bubbly and also topless."

Caffrey, of Simpsons Cross, Pembrokeshire, had denied taking the truncheon photograph - but admitted he had seen it.

Caffrey agreed that shortly afterwards he bought her a sex toy. But he said it was his way of telling her he was "no longer angry" about the truncheon photograph.

The girl, now a woman, complained to police decades ago when Caffrey was a serving police officer based in Haverfordwest.

Caffrey was finally arrested after she went to the Independent Police Complaints Commission saying the case had been "swept under the carpet".

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: "First of all I wanted answers as to why the police had not taken the matter any further.

“I went to the police as a teenager. An officer typed my statement into an old-style computer. But I never heard anything more about it.”

Caffrey was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and to have no unsupervised contact with any girl under the age of 18.
