TWO people were taken to hospital less than 24 hours after calls were made by a Pembroke councillor for safety improvements to be made at the Fingerpost accident blackspot on the A477 near Pembroke Dock.

Speaking at the July 16 evening meeting of Pembroke Town Council, Councillor Wyn Jenkins said recent roadworks at the Fingerpost had done little to alleviate safety concerns.

The following evening, July 17, a woman was removed on a spinal board from a two vehicle crash at the Fingerpost by Pembroke Dock firefighters, and two people were taken to Withybush hospital by ambulance crew following the crash.

Patricia Wall, of Hywel Way, Pembroke, a neighbour of the woman injured, who wishes to remain nameless, said the road improvements had done little to improve road safety.

“I would actually say they’ve made it worse, a neighbour was lucky to come out alive.

“Police said if she hadn’t been in a Volkswagen Golf she would not have survived; the car was a complete right-off.

“When you’re coming from Pembroke Dock along the A477, whose right of way is it? You’re just stuck there taking your life in your own hands.”

At the July 16 meeting, Cllr Jenkins said: “I can’t see the difference; they’ve spent say £500,000 on this road and I can’t see where the difference is now and then.

“We did ask for a roundabout there, there’s accidents there every day. There’s been fatals there, the accidents are there; they must be logged.”

He questioned why nearby Carew’s relatively new bypass could have two roundabouts on the same A477, and yet there wasn’t one at the Fingerpost.

“Why do they need a roundabout at Carew and one to Tenby and not one there?”

Councillors had agreed to raise their concerns with local politicians and to write asking for a roundabout.
